Hunk of Love

I just found out Hunk got adopted - woohoo!  Hunk was actually adopted by a neighbor of another volunteer at the rescue and is now named Charley. His new family has 3 older kids and a cat to keep him busy.  The cast came off and his leg healed up just fine.  Looks like he's enjoying the snow, too!

Cyrene Update

I got an update on Cyrene from her forever family - woohoo!  Her new name is Saphire and this is what they had to say:

Just wanted to send you a quick note on Saphire.... She is an awesome dog that has fit in well with our family, she is very well behaved in all situations and has developed excellent leash manners - she has made friends with my running group and she loves tagging along in the morning for the kids' school drop off... Saphire is very good with the kids and very caring and watchful of the baby.
She is just a great dog and we are happy to have her... thank you.

Saphire's family sent along a few new pictures, too!

I'm so happy for Saphire and her family; they're just perfect for each other.  We wish them all the best!

Blast From the Past

Last week we had a visitor in the house for a few days.  Thomas' co-worker Mike was going out of town and their original dog sitter fell ill so he took us up on our standing offer to watch their family pooch.  Their dog actually lived with us for about a month last year because he was one of our fosters.  Mike's family fell for Gilligan when they watched him for a weekend for us while we were out of town and he's been with them ever since.

Now named Ukui (pronouced oo-koy), we get to hear all about Gilligan's shenanigans whenever Thomas and Mike run into each other at the office.  And shenanigans there are!

I guess we shouldn't be too surprised.  This is what happened last year when I somehow had a major brainfart and left him loose in the house while I went out

In Ukui's defense, there were old ribs in the trash, so we couldn't really blame him and figured it was a one time incident.

Turns out this was just the tip of the iceberg.  Ukui is apparently a master at opening bottom freezers on fridges.  This surprised us because we have the same fridge as Mike's family and Ukui never once tried to get into ours.  I guess he was waiting for a forever family to show his true colors!  Anyway, once he gets the freezer open he eats pretty much everything in there.  Frozen meats, ice cream and his apparent favorite, Tombstone Classic Sausage Pizza.

Ukui's family literally uses The Club to keep the stuff they put in the freezer in the freezer instead of in Ukui's belly!

In any event, Ukui was very well behaved during his visit with us and didn't even try to break into our freezer.  Although he may or may not have eaten a box of pop tarts I accidentally left out.  But I'll never tell.

Saying Goodbye

Remember Smiley from earlier in the summer?  Here's when we brought him home and when he switched to a different foster home when we went on vacation.

I got an email last week from his foster mom.  She was going to be taking him to the vet to look at a growth on his tail.  He was also eating much less than normal in the previous week and was vomiting bile.  She wanted to know if he had ever done that when he was with us.  Well, when we had him he was eating like a champ and rarely even burped, nevermind threw up, so she was going to have the vet see what could be done to remedy his tummy aches in addition to the growth on his tail.  Smiley's foster mom promised to keep me updated on the results.

This afternoon I got my follow up email from her and it's what I had been dreading:

Smiley didn't make it through surgery today.  He was full of cancer inside.  At least he is at peace now.  No more poking and prodding.  I know between you and I he had the best life any dog could.  I wanted to let you know I told him you loved him this morning, I told him how much EVERYONE loved him.

It means so much to me that she told Smiley that I loved him since I didn't get a chance to see him before his surgery.  I knew that one day I would hear about one of my fosters crossing over the Rainbow Bridge, but I didn't think it would be so soon.  At least I know that Smiley was well loved in his last few months of life.  But it still hurts to know he's gone, leaving me a crying mess for most of the afternoon.  So in honor of Smiley I'm going to go snuggle and kiss all of my pets (foster included), because that was Smiley's favorite thing and I always want all of them to know how loved they are.

Goodbye, Smiley.  We'll miss you.

Hancock Update Part 2

I can't believe it's only been a month since Hancock (now Sonny) got adopted!  When Sonny's dad Paul sent me an update I had to look at a calendar because it felt like so much longer than that since we're already on our second foster dog since Sonny.

Paul and Sonny are doing really well together.  Sonny goes to daycare three times a week and is getting used to being around dozens of other dogs instead of just one or two.  Paul even sent a few pictures along!  Here are two of Sonny while he was still wearing his cone of doom.

And one without his cone of doom.

Sonny looks so at home in these pictures.  He truly looks content, relaxed and happy.  And that makes me happy.

Hancock Update!

It's been a week since Hancock went to his forever home, and I've gotten not one, but two updates on him!  How awesome is that?!

Here's what his new dad has to say (first update):

We are doing very well.  Friday night I didn't get as much sleep as desired because Hancock (now Hudson - nicknamed Sonny) decided he wanted to play with a squeaky toy at 3:00 AM and because I was waking up and listening to see that he was OK.  When I told him to stop playing with the toy he dropped it and came over to give me a kiss.  Friday he got to meet three of my neighbors and they all admired him both for his good looks and for how mellow and well behaved he is.

Saturday we went to the forest preserve for a nice long walk - about 1 hour and 1/2 with a few water breaks.  He met a few of my human friends and made 5 new doggie friends.  He is so gentle when he meets another dog.  My friends were considerate in not rushing a "first encounter".  We came home and had breakfast and then took a short walk (1 1/2 blocks) to meet the groomer.  She stopped finishing up the dog she was trimming just so she could meet my new roommate.  Again he behaved very well.  We took a few other short car trips to Pet Supplies Plus and to visit another friend - all went well.  One more walk at the nearby bike path after dinner and a last  call for a few blocks before bedtime.  Both of us slept very well.

Sunday back to the forest preserves and a few more new friends.  My little guy is getting plenty of exercise (me too) and takes doggie naps when he gets a chance.

Phew, I'm tired just reading about all that walking!  I certainly won't be worrying about Hancock getting enough exercise!  And I actually laughed out loud when I read about Hancock playing with his squeaky toy in the middle of the night; such a silly little guy!

Second update:

Sonny and I are getting along wonderfully. He gets to meet new doggies every day and I'll be taking him to meet my co-workers later in the week. His incision is healing nicely. He has gotten well acquainted with my loveseat recliner. Last night he brought a toy and placed it next to his head on a pillow and took a nap. He sleeps mostly in the kitchen on the cool slate floor but takes naps wherever he feels comfortable.

It sounds like Hancock knows he's in his forever home and is settling in nicely.  We're so glad that he and his new dad are happy together!  Yippee!

Nova Update!

Looky what I got!

Pictures of Nova (now Baxter) from his mommy.  These are scanned because they got sent via snail mail, but a little while later I got this fabulous e-mail (you all know how much I love updates!):

Baxter is such a joy to me; I can't tell you enough how happy I am to have found him.  We do spend a lot of time at the beach.  At first, he was apprehensive about going in, but once he saw the other dogs venture into the water, away he went and I can't keep him out of it.

I take him to a dog park everyday to play with other dogs.  In a short time, he has become the park favorite.  Everyone always comments on his beautiful markings and he really gets along with the other dogs.   And he attracts at least one suitor everyday.  I don't know what it is about him, but everytime we go to the beach or at the park, one dog will become enamored with him and follow him around until the owner leaves.

He also comes to my softball games and he just sits there and watches.  He has a very good disposition, as you know, and always attracts people to sit by him and just love on him.

I'll keep you updated.  I just wanted you to know he's in a very good home and gets lots of love.

Isn't that awesome?  I'm cracking up thinking about Nova having his own little entourage at the dog park (I guess Casanova was an appropriate name for him!).  It really does my heart good to know how happy and loved he is, especially because it was so hard to let him go.

Griffin Update

On Saturday I randomly ran into one of our fosters from last year while I was at the adoption show with Champagne.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE getting updates on our fosters and getting to see them is even better!  Griffin is a border collie (or maybe mini aussie or sheltie) mix and is now around 2-3 years old.  He was a total doll when we had him; very well behaved and super sweet.  He is one of the few fosters that has been allowed on the couch and that walked nicely on a leash right off the bat.

He and his sister (a 10 year old Cairn Terrier named Pebbles) are getting along great.  His family tried picking out names for him for a few days but finally decided that Griffin was a good fit for him, so it stuck.  And his mom is going to start taking him to agility classes next week.  How fun!  I'm sure he's going to love it!

We had Griffin for about a week in late March 2009.  We knew as soon as we got him that he would find a forever home quickly.  As you can see he loved running around like crazy in the snow!

We're so happy that Griffin is so happy in his forever home!

Dave Update

The other day I was thinking about Dave and wondering how he's settling in to his new home, so this email update from his forever family had perfect timing:

Carolyn,

We are not sure Bo and Dave are getting along very well.  (J/K) Please see attached photos.  Jake, formerly known as Dave, is doing great!  He fits in perfectly.  Him and Bo are best buds.  The kids love him and he is becoming quite the Momma's boy, following me around all day and cuddling on the couch.  He has been walking 1.5-2.0 miles of mine and Bo's walking route everyday and loves it.  His stamina is not quite there yet to go farther and I don't want him to burn too many calories.  Our vet feels confident that the palsey he has from the head injury could heal itself.  Already, because of all the mouthing and stuff him and Bo are doing, his eating has improved dramatically.  Thank you again for everything.  We love him.

Bo on the left, Dave (Jake) on the right

Dave (Jake) on the right again

Dave (Jake) on the left - look at how muddy they are!

To say that this email and pictures give me the warm fuzzies would be a serious understatement.  I can't even put into words how happy it makes me to see Dave (well, Jake) snuggling with his new brother Bo and to hear how much his family loves him.  I mean, look at them!  You can just tell that they're inseparable and totally best friends (and well cared for).

Yay, Dave!

Baxter Update

On January 30th we were lucky enough to see Baxter - aka Dr. Tiny Cat because he used to look like this guy

Baxter was our first (and to date, only) cat foster and has been in his new home for almost two months.

On a Saturday morning in September last year, I was getting ready to take our foster dog to the weekly adoption show when the hubs (aka Thomas) got a phone call from one of his co-workers.  His son was home from college and had brought a little surprise with him.  No, it wasn't mono (they knew about that), it was a tiny kitten!  And not only were animals not allowed in the apartment the kid lived in, but his mom is anti-cat, so the kitty had to go.  An hour later I arrived to pick up the little bundle of joy.  The kid had gotten the kitten a week earlier from his neighbor, whose cat had had kittens.  This means that poor baby Baxter (as he had been named) was separated from his mom and siblings when he was only 4 weeks old - way too young!

I scooped up Baxter and off we went to see "the cat people" from our rescue (we're usually on the dog side of things).  After confirming that Baxter was, indeed, freaking adorable and making a few phone calls we secured a vet appointment for him for that afternoon so we could make sure he was healthy.  As it turns out, he had fleas, ear mites and an eye infection, but overall was a healthy little guy.  He would need a topical flea treatment, drops in his ears, medicine squished in his eyes 3 times a day for 2 weeks and oral antibiotics twice a day for 2 weeks.  It seemed a touch overwhelming as the vet tech demonstrated his eye medicine and antibiotics, but after a day or so I got the hang of it.  It also helped that he was little enough to still have the reflex to do this:

Basically scoop up his hind feet but immediately relax and quit squirming when you picked him up by his scruff!  Hilarious, adorable and convenient all at once!

Why yes, I am holding him with one hand!  Look at how tiny; he only weighs about a pound!

Baxter was awesome.  He was already eating solid food in addition to wet food (impressive for a kitten his age!) and was a total piglet, so getting him to eat enough was easy.  And he was a pro at using a litterbox - score!  He would play for hours on end and was extremely cuddly.  Because he was so adventurous we actually kept him in a dog crate when we weren't with him so he wouldn't hurt himself by doing something silly like jumping off the dresser.

 Cruising around in Thomas' shoe

Chilling out in a big mug

Unfortunately (sort of), about 2 weeks after we brought Baxter home we left to go on a much anticipated month long trip to Spain (which was fabulous, by the way).  So Baxter went off to another foster home.  I sent him with food, a favorite toy and a note asking for updates from both his new foster family and hopefully the family that would adopt him, since we were certain he would be adopted before we would return.

Much to our surprise, Baxter was not adopted while we were gone.  I got in touch with his foster mom asking for an update.  As it turns out, she was feeling overwhelmed and long story short, after a month of very frustrating emails, we got Baxter back just after Thanksgiving (a special thanks to our friends John and Mary for assisting in picking him up!).

This time he was big enough that he could be left safely in a bedroom instead of having to be in a crate when we were gone.  Baxter's personality was really starting to blossom.  And he had developed an adorable new habit of suckling on fleece blankets and ears.  He actually started waking me up in the morning by trying to suckle my ear while purring loudly.  It tickled soooo bad but it was so cute I'd let him do it as long as I could stand it.  But I thought the weirdest part was that this was a habit he had developed recently, and I would have expected something like that more when he was tinier.  Look at how big he's getting!

Baxter's other adorably notable habit was that when he would wake up from a nap, he would immediately start meowing loudly while beginning to wander around the house as if to say "Hey!  Where is everybody?  I'm awake - pay attention to me!".  He'd stop meowing once you picked him up and gave him a cuddle.

Baxter met his future mom at the very fist adoption show we took him to (the first he'd been to in over a month when he was supposed to be going to them weekly).  As a bonus for us, Baxter and another kitten were intended as non-surprise Christmas gifts for the children of the woman adopting them, so we got to keep Baxter until right before the holidays.  He now shares his home with 9 and 11 year old human children, Tigger (another kitten who is a month younger than him) and his new mom.  Baxter is still suckling away on blankets and continues to play non-stop.  He's also a model big brother and has taught Tigger how to groom himself and fun ways to get into mischief.

 I think he remembers me!

We loved every second of having Baxter around and are happy that his new mom gives us updates!
